Not in St. Pete?
BirderPlace started at Crescent Lake — but our goal is bigger.
We’re building a New-Birder Toolkit that can be used anywhere: simple guides, confidence shortcuts, and a clear path from “curious” to “I’ve got this.”
We’re also exploring small-group virtual Zoom sessions for people who want live guidance but don’t live near the lake.
If you’ve signed up for our newsletter, you’ll be the first to hear when these are ready.
Where we meet (and why)
Crescent Lake Park in St Pete FL is one of the easiest places to start birding partly because there are so many Cool Birds which are easy to see and identify even without binoculars — click here to seem some pix!
During our typical, relaxed 60- to 90-minute walk around the lake, it is common to see 30 to 40 species. Birding doesn’t get easier — or more enjoyable — than that! Sure other nearby parks may have more birds, but Crescent Lake has way more birding DENSITY than almost any other spot in the area.
Over 170 species of birds have been reported at our humble urban lake. They are easily accessible and photographable. Come see songbirds in the trees, raptors in the sky, waders on the shore and of course the iconic American White Pelicans fishing communally in the lake.
Joining a walk is so easy. Click here to see our scheduled walks or here to suggest other times that work for you.
When you arrive, look for John the Birdvangelist, pictured below. All you need to bring is your curiosity, your phone, and some water. Keep in mind that there are no bathrooms at the park.
Though not necessary, we highly recommend you click here set up an eBird account, here to download the Merlin app and here to download the amazing eBird app.
